For all those indie and aspiring artists and performers. Once you have established your stage name or pseudonym make your name an entity. Go to your local clerks office and get the paper work to start the process of incorporating your name as your name now becomes the brand. Decide if you want to remain a sole proprietorship, partnership (if its you and someone else), limited liability Corporation, or a C or S Corporation. Then set up a bank account under your company name. Once these steps are complete your on your way. You must also trademark your name to protect yourself. Always remember that in this entertainment field it's 85% business and 15% music

Copyright
First and foremost COPYRIGHT, COPYRIGHT, COPYRIGHT. I can not emphasize it enough. NOT THE POOR MAN'S COPYRIGHT. The goverment copyright. http://www.copyright.gov/ the cost is $35 if you file online and $45 if you file via mail. You do not have to file each work song, or poem, or artwork individually. You can start off by submitting a bulk of your works as a volume and later pull out the individual works for a individual certificate number. Hope this helps come back next week wednesday for the next post.
